Sights and excursion destinations of the region
Art-loving observers are astonished and enthusiastic, considering the rich sacral and secular architecture. Often surprise the visitor impressive size, spectacular ornaments, rich ornaments and details.
- Old Court Yard
The Alte Hofhaltung, whose core forms the former imperial and episcopal palace, used to be directly connected to the cathedral. Through the "beautiful gate" one arrives in the romantic courtyard surrounded by half-timbered buildings. The gate was created in 1573 by the sculptor Pankraz Wagner and finds its coronation in a relief of Mary, framed by Heinrich and Kunigunde with the Dommodell, Peter and George, lying next to it, the personifications of Main and Regnitz. Although the entire complex includes buildings from different stylistic periods, the Alte Hofhaltung still forms a harmonious ensemble. The Renaissance building with council chamber is striking.
- Little Venice
The former fishing village is affectionately called "Little Venice". It consists of a nicely decorated and restored row of old 19th century houses. Small, densely packed half-timbered buildings with balconies and tiny front gardens, where the moorings for the barges are located, line up on the banks of the Regnitz and form a romantic ensemble. "Little Venice" is the picturesque backdrop for the "Sandkerwa" folk festival that takes place in August, with the Fischerstechen and the Italian Night.
