The 7.10 m high bronze head of the philosopher Karl Marx on a pedestal covered with Ukrainian granite is a striking eye-catcher in the cityscape of Chemnitz.
The oversized Marx head was created in 1971 by the Russian sculptor Lew Kerbel.
Behind it, the monumental tablet by Volker Beier and Heinz Schumann is emblazoned with the phrase "proletarians of all countries, unite!" from the Communist Manifesto in four languages.
Surrounded by the prestigious opera house, the König-Albert-Museumbau, the Chemnitzer Hof and the St. Petrikirche, the Theaterplatz is the city's most beautiful architectural ensemble. Richard Möbius, once a town councilor for the city of Chemnitz, had the ambition to create a complex here that was both contemporary and flamboyant. The opera house with its neo-baroque forms (1906-1909) is determined by the domed building and the towering stage house above.
With their richness and diversity, the Chemnitz museums are real treasure troves of our past and present.
Learn more about the history of the city on the Schloßberg, about vehicle knowledge in the Wasserschloss Klaffenbach. The Industry Museum Chemnitz shows you a wealth of knowledge and sights on more than 200 years of Saxon industrial history.
Always worth a visit is the Natural History Museum with a very special attraction: the Stone Forest or the Villa Esche, architectural gem, with the first Henry van de Velde Museum in Germany.
Whether you visit the German SPIELEmuseum Chemnitz on further stages of your museum excursion or prefer to immerse yourself in the underground world of the Dome of the Rock - exciting encounters are guaranteed according to your individual taste.
Visit the nearby Erzgebirge, drive with the Pregnitztalbahn (narrow gauge), take a look at the Erzgebirge "very small" in the Kleinergebirge or "drive" into various mines. - Good luck for -
