Sights and excursion destinations of the region

  • Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul

The art and cultural monument of international standing is the most visited attraction on the “Romanesque Road”. The cathedral is one of the most important cultural monuments of the Middle Ages thanks to its Romanesque-Gothic architecture and above all because of its highly Gothic monumental sculpture and building ornaments. The life-size donor statues in the “West choir (most famous couple “Ekkehard and Uta”) created by the so-called Naumburg masters in the middle of the 13th century as well as the depiction of the Passion story on the west rood screen impress with their realistic design. Architecturally significant are the late Romanesque crypt, the “Ostlettner” and the medieval glass windows.

  • The Nietzsche House

The neoclassical residence in the Weingarten 18 was the home of the family of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche from 1858 to 1897. Today, here is the permanent exhibition “Nietzsche in Naumburg”. On the upper floor there are changing exhibitions dedicated to different aspects of Nietzsche’s life and work.

  • The Schönburg

Approximately five kilometres downstream from Naumburg on a sandstone rock rises the former bishop's castle “Schönburg”. From here you can enjoy an excellent view over the Saale valley to the opposite “Dechantenberg” and castle “Goseck”. The first documented mention of “Schönburg” goes back to the 12th century. It belonged to the possession of the Naumburg bishops, who have built palace, chapel and keep. Today, the mighty tower invites you to walk up and enjoy the view. In the castle tavern you can experience a typical knight`s feast.

  • Cycling

Naumburg is the starting point for a wide variety of cycling tours, combining sporting experiences with discoveries of nature, culinary delights and cultural sights. In particular, the cycle paths along the rivers Saale, Unstrut, Ilm and Elster and their interconnections have been newly developed and signposted in recent years.
